alcohol abuse - knowing when you've got a problem
One of the most common attitudes of people affected by alcohol abuse, is to deny there's a problem to start with. These individuals are either unable, or unwilling to admit to themselves, that they can't control their drinking.
Alcohol addiction is considered a disease. Over time, the "high" or whatever feeling alcohol gives a person, will be harder to achieve unless they drink more, and more often. Eventually, many people reach a point where they are no longer able to function in their daily lives without some kind of treatment.
Neighbors, friends, and acquaintances are surprised to learn that someone they know has an alcohol abuse problem, because the person doesn't display what they see as the typical signs of alcohol addiction: unsteady gait, glassy eyes, alcohol on their breath, and tremors.
But not all alcoholics will display the same symptoms, since they become skilled at hiding their drinking, which can follow highly individual patterns of when and where they indulge. For some, drinking themselves senseless on weekends, doesn't qualify as alcoholism, and therefore, they don't need treatment.
Alcohol addiction is a serious illness. The first toll it takes is usually on the life of the person who is drinking. While the alcohol itself works in insidious ways on the body, the drinker's behavior can destroy their work, home and social life.
It may take intervention by a circle of family and friends, to make the individual struggling with alcohol abuse admit that they have a problem, and seek treatment, for them, and those they love.
