alcoholics anonymous - learn more about this important organization
The seed for Alcoholics Anonymous was planted in 1935, when Bill W., a New York stockbroker and alcoholic, sought a way out of his addiction.
He first joined the Oxford Group, a primarily non-drinking fellowship that emphasized spiritual values, under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Shoemaker, an Episcopal clergyman. With their help, Bill W. was able to achieve sobriety and go on to work with other alcoholics, although at that time, none of them were able to stay on the path to recovery.
At the same time, the second half of the Alcoholics Anonymous partnership was also struggling with an addiction to alcohol. Dr. Bob S., a surgeon from Ohio, had joined the Oxford Group, but unlike Bill W., had not been able to kick his habit. Not until the two met, and the doctor saw for the first time, the face of his own substance abuse, did he feel that he could finally achieve recovery.
Bill W. emphasized the definition of alcoholism as a disease of the mind, body and spirit. The concept was a new one to Dr. Bob, but had been taught to Bill W. by another physician, Dr. William D. Silkworth of Towns Hospital, New York, where Bill had been a patient.
Thanks to the support of these two men and his own determination, Dr. Bob became sober, and the three of them established what would become the first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter, in Akron, Ohio. A second would follow shortly in New York, and a third chapter would open in Cleveland, in 1939. Today, there are chapters all over the world, with a total over the years of some 2,000,000 members, 35% of which, are women.
Alcoholics Anonymous consists of men and women, who having experienced the lows of alcohol addiction, and having achieved recovery, work together in an effort to help other alcoholics to beat their drinking problems.
